El proyecto parte de la actuación sobre un contexto mucho más amplio. El casco urbano de Cuenca, se encuentra dividido físicamente a causa de las vías de tren convencional de la línea Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia. Esto supone la existencia de una gran barrera que solo puede ser atravesada tanto por el tráfico rodado como por el peatón en cinco puntos de su recorrido, creando una grave desconexión entre ambas partes de la ciudad.
The starting point of the project is the analysis of a wide context. The city of Cuenca is divided by the railways of the line Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia. This implies the existence of a barrier that can only be traversed by both traffic and pedestrians in five spots, creating a serious disconnection between the two sides of the city.

The starting point of the project is the analysis of a wide context. The city of Cuenca is divided by the railways of the line Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia. This implies the existence of a barrier that can only be traversed by both traffic and pedestrians in five spots, creating a serious disconnection between the two sides of the city.
El primer paso es proceder a identificar las características de estos terrenos, incluyendo las infrastructuras existentes, los recursos infrautilizados y aquellos elementos que potencian la actividad alrededor de ellos.
Este primer análisis físico debe ir acompañado por un estudio de la situación política que afecta a esta parte de la ciudad, y al contexto socio-económico de Cuenca.
Respecto a las consideraciones políticas, se pone de manifiesto la situación deficitaria de la línea de tren de media distancia Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia, señalada por el Ministerio de Fomento como una de las líneas más deficitarias de toda la red nacional, y en grave peligro de desaparición.
Es este hecho el que provoca el comienzo del debate sobre la utilidad de los terrenos que actualmente se encuentran infrautilizados, ya que la reducción del servicio ha sido drástica durante los últimos años, hasta el punto de existir solamente dos servicios diarios en cada dirección de la vía.
Para determinar los posibles usos adecuados de estos terrenos, la infografía muestra una serie de datos socio-económicos con el objetivo de señalar las fortalezas y oportunidades de crecimiento en la ciudad de Cuenca, y a partir de ella se elaboran una serie de estrategias a seguir en el diseño urbano de la ciudad.
Estas directrices suponen una declaración de intenciones, que debe actuar como un documento abierto con capacidad de modificación por parte de los ciudadanos, para llegar a una solución en la que la opinión popular tenga un gran peso específico.

The first step is to proceed to identify the characteristics of these areas, including existing infrastructures, underused resources and those elements that enhance the activity around them.
This first physical analysis is attached to a study of the political situation around this part of the city, and the social-economic context of Cuenca.
With regard to political considerations, the deficit of the line Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia is explained. The route was appointed by the Ministry of Development as one of the most deficient of all the national lines, and in danger of disappearance.
It was this fact that began the debate on the utility of the lands that are currently underused, since the service has been dramatically reducedin recent years, to the point where there are only two daily services in each direction of the route.
In order to identify potential appropriate uses of these lands , the infographic shows a series of social-economic data which point out the strengths and growth opportunities of the city of Cuenca. This is the starting point for the porposal of a number of strategies to be developed as part of the future urban design of the city.

En esta fase se procede a concretar una de tantas propuestas que integrarían el proyecto en su conjunto. Se trata de la rehabilitación del Andén de Mercancías de la Estación de Ferrocarril convencional dentro de la Fase 1 del proyecto, para darle un nuevo uso que comience a introducir al ciudadano en el espacio, con el fin de que poco a poco se vaya apropiando de este nuevo espacio en la ciudad.
At this stage we proceed to develop in depth one of the several proposals that would integrate the whole project. We talk about the rehabilitation of the Goods Platform at the Conventional Rail Station within the Phase 1 of the projectj. La necesidad de un nuevo mercado de abastos se encuentra debidamente justificada en la fase analítica del proyecto. El Ayuntamiento de Cuenca convocó hace años un concurso para la demolición y construcción de un nuevo mercado en el centro de la ciudad, debido a su actual estado de ruina. Sin embargo, la falta de liquidez del consistorio y los problemas que este derribo y construcción supondrían para los comerciantes, lleva años frenando este proyecto. Esta propuesta pretende solucionar ambos problemas, ya que tendría un coste menor y no supondría el desalojo temporal de dichos comerciantes, que además verían mejorada la accesibilidad de sus mercancías al mercado, y seguirían estando situados en una zona céntrica en la ciudad.
The need for a new City Market has been properly justified in the analytical phase. Cuenca's City Council held a competition for the demolition and construction of a new market in the city center, due to its current state of ruin. However, the crisis and the problems that the demolition an construction of the new market would entail for the traders has been holding back this project for years. This proposal is intended to solve both problems, since it would cost less and would not involve the temporary removal of the shops. It would also improve the accessibility of their goods to market, and they would still be located in a central area of the city.
El diseño del nuevo mercado respeta la forma existente del edificio, eliminando el zócalo inferior e introduciendo una gran cantidad de aperturas para permitir un mejor aprovechamiento de la luz natural. Los espacios de venta se organizan en forma de cajas distribuidas en planta, que perforan los muros y se agrupan en altura, permitiendo aumentar la superficie comercial. Los espacios comunes aparecen en el espacio intersticial entre dichas cajas, con un gran protagonismo de la luz y la naturaleza, que se adueña del espacio común, desdibujando así el límite interior-exterior.
The new market design respects the existing form of the building, eliminating the lower base and introducing several openings which enable a better use of the natural light. The selling spaces are organized as an asymmetric distribution of boxes, perforating the walls and grouped into high, resulting an increased retail space. Common spaces appear in the interstitial space between these boxes, where light and nature play a major role. This nature takes over the common space, blurring the indoor-outdoor boundary.
